One of the most controversial things about the current-gen Honda Civic is how it seemed to overcompensate with those massive fake vents and generally over-aggressive styling. In Type R form, this styling actually worked to some extent, but on lesser models, it was a bit much. Come 2022, and there will be an all-new Civic hitting the streets – one that fixes a lot of what was wrong with the current model.
Right away, it’s easy to see that the new Civic has a toned-down appearance up front. It looks sleek, modern, and well, less aggressive. It does have a Toyota-like air dam but the massive fake vents are gone. The sleek lights with new LEDs really add to the modern look too. The side profile is, arguably, more sculpted than before, but it’s not overstated. Add in the coupe-like roof line, and this four-door prototype is quite the looker.
Around back, however, we see something very familiar. Do you recognize those taillights and the shape of the rear deck? If you don’t let me point it out to you – it looks a lot like an Audi A3. In fact, there were a lot of comments on social media that pointed this out right away. We certainly agree. The Audi-like looked is further emphasized by the exhaust outlets located in each lower corner of the rear fascia. Overall, it’s a nice look, but it’s not the most original design in the world.
As you probably guessed, the new Civic will only be available in sedan – like the prototype here – and hatchback. This was expected after demise of the coupe late in the current generation. There is a question as to what models will be available in hatchback form, but it looks like the hatchback body style could be limited to just the Civic Si and Type R, both of which will also offer manual transmissions.
2022 Honda Civic Interior – Looking German
We’d be lying if we didn’t admit to seeing a little bit of German influence in this one rendered image of the next-gen Civic’s interior. The long, almost flat dashboard screams Audi while the infotainment display on top of the dash was borrowed from yester-Year BMWs. It does look like Honda will be retaining that volume control knob, a lesson learned from the past. Overall, the cabin looks toned down compared to before. There looks to be a serious deficit of physical buttons, suggesting that most features will be controlled via the touchscreen or, perhaps, a track-pad like that found in most newer Mercedes’.
2022 Honda Civic Powertrain and Performance
Honda has yet to reveal any information on what we can expect in terms of performance, but don’t expect to see any major jump in performance from current models. The entry-level models will probably continue on the with naturally aspirated 2.0-liter with 158 horsepower and 138 pound-feet of torque. The Sport model featured a 1.5-liter turbo-four that was good for 180 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The bridge between the base models and the Type R is the SI with the same 1.5-liter but tuned to deliver 205 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque. The range-topping Civic Type R Had a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that was good for 306 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
Our estimates put the lower trim levels at some 165 horsepower and maybe 140 pounds-feet of torque. The Sport could go as high as 190 horsepower while the SI could see a boost to as high as 220 horsepower and 205 pound-feet of torque. The Type R, on the other hand, has some stout competition and could be pushed up to the 350-horsepower mark with around 320 pound-feet of torque. Base models will continue to be offered with the CVT transmission, while the Si and Type R will be offered with a six-speed manual. Expect the Civic to remain a FWD model as it rolls into the next-generation, even in Type R form.

2022 Honda Civic Pricing and Release Date
The Honda Civic you see here is just a prototype, and the production model isn’t expected to be revealed until sometime in early 2021 with sales to commence for the 2022 model year in fall of 2021. Pricing isn’t expected to be announced until late summer of 2021, but don’t expect pricing to differ too much from what you’d pay for a new Civic today. The current model starts at $21,050, so the next-gen LX could start around $22,500 at most. The range-topping model will come in around $28,500 with the Type R creeping up from $37,495 to somewhere closer to $39,000 when it launches.
