Acura has taken the first major step in reviving the Type S name with an all-new concept that is based on the next-gen 2020 Acura TLX. Acura claims that this concept will “heavily inspire” the 2020 Acura TLX Type S, which also means that it gives us a preview of what the next-gen TLX in base form will look like.
The most important thing that we can note about the next-gen TLX is that it will shed its family-sedan appearance and evolve into a sportback of sorts with a greenhouse that sits toward the rear and a much longer, sportier hood. Little is known about what we can expect from the TLX Type S when it debuts sometime in 2020, but with the current TLX maxing out at 290 horsepower, the standard next-gen TLX should offer around 310 horsepower in V-6 form. That means that the TLX Type S should deliver around 350 horsepower based on the 25-35 horsepower improvement that we’ve seen on previous Type S models from 2002-2008.
The concept that you see here features LED light, a “Double Apex Blue Pearl” exterior finish, and 21-inch wheels. Acura has thrown in a set of Brembo four-piston brake calipers in each corner, so we can expect those to carry over to production as well. If we had to guess, we’d say that – despite a lack of performance specifications – this concept is near-production ready. Aside from this, Acura is planing to introduce a second Type S model within the next two years and we’re guessing that will be the Acura RDX Type S as it was recently updated and could be a hit on the Performance SUV market.
